1. Depersonalize

Pack up personal items that might distract buyers and hurt a potential sale. Family photographs, heirlooms, and other sentimental items have personal value to you and your family, but buyers walking through your home will have a hard time visualizing themselves living there if they’re faced with so many family mementos. Make sure to also store your more eclectic pieces of art and furniture away in a storage unit while your home is on the market. Strive to keep your home as neutral and on-trend as possible.

2. Declutter

Buyers are looking for a blank slate. That means that the more items you have lying around, the harder it is for them to visualize their own furniture and belongings in the home. Decluttering will make it easier for buyers to see themselves in the space. Empty bookcases and clean off your kitchen counters. Donate or discard items that you haven’t used in over a year. Store away knickknacks and objects that you plan to keep. While decluttering can be time consuming, it also means you’ll have less to move!

3. Repair

For many buyers, repairs can make or break a sale! Most people are looking for a move-in ready home where they won’t need to make any repairs or changes right away. Even if the repairs are minor, some buyers will see them as a sign that the home hasn’t been well cared for and they’ll wonder what else is lurking below the surface. Before listing your home, walk around and make a list of everything that needs to be repaired. Fix any leaky faucets, jammed drawers, and doors that don’t close properly. Replace cracked tiles, torn screens, and patch any holes in the walls. Every detail counts!

4. Clean

A clean house will leave buyers with a positive impression. Make sure you vacuum, mop, polish mirrors, and dust under furniture and inside cabinets. Wash the windows inside and out and spray down the exterior of your home. Re-caulk tubs, showers, and sinks. Air out musty rooms and get rid of any strange odors. For extra sparkle, hire a professional cleaning crew to scour your home from top to bottom!

5. Stage

Once your house is clean and neat, it’s time to stage it for buyers! Arrange furniture so each room seems large and spacious. Replace old and out-of-fashion objects with trendy updates. Use neutral linens and towels in the bedrooms and bathrooms. If you feel lost, don’t hesitate to get your home staged by a professional. Stagers know the real estate market and what sells; they can give you advice to drum up interest from potential buyers so you can sell your home quickly and for a great price!
