7 Fun Things to Do in North County San Diego

You’ll never experience a shortage of fun things to do in North County San Diego. Wether you’re currently contemplating a move to North County or you already live in the area, we’ve rounded up some of the top sights and activities to keep those stay-cation vibes strong.

From the sunny beaches of Del Mar to the smell of wild eucalyptus in Escondido, North County San Diego is teeming with natural beauty. Foodies, nature and shopping lovers rejoice! We’ll share everything you need to know about planning a great weekend in our favorite area of San Diego.

Beaches

Beaches are listed first for a reason. They’re absolutely stunning! The coastlines near Downtown San Diego are beautiful, but nothing quite compares to the beaches in North County. Head over to Seagrove Park in Del Mar for a beautiful stroll through one of the most affluent pockets of San Diego. For a family friendly beach, be sure to take the kids to Moonlight Beach in Encinitas. Nothing screams Summer nostalgia quite like the snack shack there. Don’t shy away in colder weather, these beaches are meant to be enjoyed all year around.

Wine Tasting

Grape lovers need no reason to sip on endless varietals from the several amazing wine hotspots in San Diego. A short drive from North County is the beautiful wine country of Temecula, with South Coast Winery, Callaway, and Europa being just a few of our favorites.

If you’re craving wine but don’t feel like making the drive to Temecula, Escondido is home to two fantastic wineries, Hungry Hawk and Cordiano.

Self-Realization Gardens

Located in one of the cutest beach towns in San Diego – Encinitas. This beautiful landmark is not to miss. Head over after lunch or for sunset for breathtaking views of cliffside sea and de-stress while walking through the gardens. Be sure to say hello to the Koi fish that live in the garden’s ponds – there are a handful of impressively old Koi’s swimming about.

San Diego Botanical Gardens

While you’re in Encinitas, take in the sights and sounds at the Botanic Gardens (free on Tuesdays!). Abundant with native plant-life, you’ll be sure to get a plethora of landscaping ideas for your new home! Quick tip: head to the website to get a sneak peek of what’s in bloom before visiting!

Hike Infamous Potato Chip Rock

Infamous for its long selfie lines that is. You’ll definitely want to snap a photo while sitting on the iconic “potato chip rock” after the challenging uphill hike. You’re sure to get a great workout while enjoying beautiful views of rolling North County hillsides. This is one of the most popular hikes in San Diego, if not the most.

Visit the Palomar Observatory

Science lover or not, this museum is captivating. Visited by tens of thousands of visitors annually, the Palomar Observatory has something to offer everyone. Perfect for a day date or a trip with the family.

North County Restaurants

Foodies have a lot to be excited about in North County San Diego. America’s Finest City has become quite the culinary mecca and you’ll never have a shortage of dining options in any part of the county. However, we’re really fond of a large handful of restaurants – wether it’s date night, a quick bite, or family time, these are some of our favorite picks.
