The Bernardo Winery in Rancho Bernardo, San Diego

Rancho Bernardo is a great community to move to in San Diego. With plenty of local amenities and many great schools, there’s a lot to like about this North County neighborhood! But one local Rancho Bernardo business that’s a favorite of residents and visitors alike is the Bernardo Winery, a historic winery and village with plenty to offer for the whole family.

History of the Winery

Bernardo Winery was founded in 1889 by five business partners. But when prohibition started, business slowed. In 1927, Vincent Rizzo, the first generation Rizzo owner, purchased the winery from the original five owners and continued production. During the 1940s, Bernardo Winery was a major wine supplier of San Diego County, in addition to producing and supplying olive oil made from olive trees located on the property.

Since then, the Bernardo Winery has become a destination rich in history, hospitality, and charm. In addition to a winemaking facility and tasting room, the winery is home to over twelve shops, artisan galleries, and workspaces—all tucked into the architecture of the original winery buildings. As Southern California’s oldest operating winery, Bernardo Winery is the place to go for a relaxing day of fun in San Diego.

Location

Located at 13330 Paseo Del Verano Norte, less than three miles from the I-15 Freeway, Bernardo Winery in the Rancho Bernardo area is easy to access from all over San Diego. With multiple hotels nearby, Bernardo Winery is not only great for a day trip, but also a perfect place to enjoy during a staycation or longer visit.

Winery Village Shops

Bernardo Winery is home to a village packed with eateries and art shops. Bernardo Winery Kitchen is open Tuesday-Sunday from 11-4pm, and serves pasta, paninis, salads, and appetizers, making it a great place to grab some food before wine tasting. The Manzanita Coffee House offers coffee and espresso for a pick-me-up. There’s even a Sweet Shoppe and art studio offering jewelry making and painting classes. Check out all the shops on their site here for more information.

Upcoming Public Events

Bernardo Winery offers a variety of public events. Every Sunday afternoon, they host live music on the tasting room patio. They also host a farmer’s market every Friday from 9am to 1pm. Additionally, they’re holding their 42nd Annual Fall Arts and Crafts Fair this October 19th and 20th. Stop by to pick up some hand-crafted goods and enjoy some wine and live music. Admission and parking are free! In addition, you can also book private events at their venue, such as weddings or other parties.
